NASCAR Legend David Pearson: The Silver Fox

August 24, 2009

While there are a number of challenging tracks on the NASCAR stock car racing circuit, few have earned the fearsome reputation of South Carolina’s Darlington Raceway. Known as ‘the track too tough to tame’, its shaped like an egg with a surface that shreds tires. Some of the best drivers–including NASCAR’s ‘King’ Richard Petty never mastered it. David Person, on the other hand, dominated at Darlington. He won 10 races and won 12 poles–both records that will likely never be broken. He actually made the ‘track too tough to tame’ look downright easy.

David Pearson was born on December 22, 1934 in Whitney, SC”a textile town near Spartanburg. Like most of the locals, his parents worked in the local cotton mill and did their best to provide. David dropped out of school after the 10th grade to work in the mill, but soon quit that life as well–he was drawn to racing cars and began running at short tracks in the Carolinas. He ran his first race on 9/19/52 in Woodruff South Carolina. Within a few years, he won his first championship at the Greenville”Pickens Speedway in 1959.

Pearson never sought out stock car racing immortality, but some of his friends had other ideas. They began raising money to buy a car to race in the NASCAR Grand National series (the forerunner to today’s Sprint Cup). With a patchwork of financial backing, David began racing a limited schedule on the Grand National circuit and was named the 1960 rookie of the year. In 1961,he attracted sponsors and started to race a full time schedule. Not long after, he was considered among the best in the sport winning Grand National titles in 1966, 1968 and 1969.

The 1970s saw Pearson cut back his schedule somewhat, focusing on superspeedways. In 1972, he started driving for the Wood Brothers in the #21 car that he was to make a legend. In 1973, he won 11 races in 18 starts”an incredible feat even by todays standards. Through the end of the 1970s, Pearson won 43 races. In addition to his mastery of Darlingon, he posted remarkable numbers all over the circuit. He is one of two men to have won more than 100 races, and his 105 is second only to The King Richard Pettys 200 wins. Hes also second on career poles (113) to Petty. Head to head, however, he has a slight edge over NASCARs legendary King: in races where he and Petty finished 1-2, Pearson won 33 to Pettys 30. His 11 consecutive poles at Charlotte is a feat that will likely never be matched. Another record that may never be broken is his 18.29% winning percentage, as well as his record of starting from the pole in 20% of the races he ran.

Pearson is alive and well and still lives in Spartanburg, SC. In March 2000, SC Highway 221 through Spartanburg County was renamed David Pearson Boulevard in his honor. He still gets out on the Darlington track a few times a year–impressive for anyone, but even more so for a 75 year old man. And he’s still got the sterling silver hair which gave him his nickname of ‘The Silver Fox’.

The Different Types Of 4×4 Accident Insurance

August 24, 2009

All vehicles including 4×4 vehicles should have insurance to cover the costs of damages and injuries due to accidents. If you don?t have insurance then you will be forced to pay to not only fix your vehicle but to fix the other person?s vehicle. You will also be liable for any medical bills that they have as well as your own. You should therefore get insurance to protect yourself and your assets. Before you decide on a type of insurance to get you should review the types of insurance that are offered. This will allow you to pick insurance based off of your needs.

In most states drivers are required to have the most basic type of insurance known as liability insurance. This coverage only covers the other driver?s medical bills and the damage done to their property. This means that any damage done to your vehicle or any medical bills that you incur will have to come out of your own pocket. Liability insurance is a very low cost insurance and is only recommended to those who can?t afford full coverage or have an older vehicle that has little to no value.

You may also consider getting coverage for damage sustained from accidents not involving other vehicles. If you live by the ocean for example, you may have to worry about storm damages from hurricanes. People who live in the inner city are more concerned with vandalism and theft. A 4×4 is particularly more expensive to cover since it is considered a high-profile vehicle. Insurance agents will categorize it as being more likely to suffer these types of losses, and therefore it becomes a greater hazard to cover. Look over these types of policies carefully since some don?t cover specific types of damages.

Full coverage insurance, which is also known as comprehensive insurance, will fully insure you and your vehicle. This means that your vehicle as well as the third party?s property and all medical bills will be covered. This type of insurance will be the most expensive type of insurance but it also includes vandalism and weather damage. For older vehicles comprehensive insurance isn?t worth the premium that you will pay. However if you have a vehicle that has a lot of value to it then you will want to have full coverage.

Drivers looking for some off road fun have to get further insurance if they want to be covered. Many plans will become void while you are driving off of the pavement since you are at a higher risk for damages. Off road 4×4 insurance works the same as a regular policy in protecting your vehicle from damages sustained just from driving. Drivers who participate in competitions may seek out insurance that covers them for a single day, instead of extended periods.

Choosing the proper insurance for your 4×4 vehicle can be difficult. You need to be careful when you?re looking at various companies? policies as they are not all the same. Some companies have different guidelines they use in their policies. It?s important to ensure that the policies are as close to each other as possible when you?re comparing rates from different companies.

The Engine Computer Is Likely The Greatest Improvement To Cars Since The Car Was Invented.

August 24, 2009

Cars have greatly evolved over the years since their beginnings back in the early 1900’s. Many things have evolved surrounding cars as well, such as the roads they drive on, the distance that they travel, and the demands we have put on cars.

One of the biggest evolutions to cars is hardly visible to the average person. The engine computer, otherwise called the ECM (engine computer module) was developed to help improve many things about the way an engine performs.

One of those things is the gas mileage. The gas mileage on cars improved greatly when they started to use engine computers. Everyone likes better gas mileage and that happened with the advent of the ECM.

Another thing that the engine computer helps is the emissions of the vehicle. The computer is able to increase the efficiency of the car based on the conditions that it is driving in. Whether cold or hot, flat or incline, freeway or city streets the engine computer adjusts the flow of fuel and the intake of air to provide the most efficient balance.

The ECM also serves as a monitoring system for the driver and can make them aware when there is a problem. When a problem is detected, it sends a signal to the instrument cluster in the dash telling a light to turn on that will indicate to the driver that there is a problem. Also, a code number is stored in the ECM that is accessible by a mechanic. That code will tell him what the exact problem is allowing him t o know what to fix.

Engine computers also monitor things like the coolant temperature and oil pressure. These things used to be monitored via a mechanical gauge. The ECM will then send a signal to the instrument cluster only if the normal operating parameters are broken. This will in turn activate a light in the dash indicating a potential problem.

Of all of the improvements to our vehicles over the years, you can see why the engine computer is perhaps one of the largest. It is relatively unknown to most people, who simply enjoy the benefits of it.

We will certainly see more improvements to cars as time moves on. There may never be a car like we see in the movie, “Back to the Future”, but there will be drastic changes that impact our travel. One such change is very close. Chevy announced a new car, called the Chevy Volt which they claim is able to get 230 miles per gallon. It is scheduled to be on lots in 2010.
