Should I Replace My Speedometer Cluster Myself

August 31, 2009

When you look at your dashboard what you are actually looking at is an instrument cluster. Within in the instrument cluster are several individual clusters, or gauges, that produce readings on certain aspects of the car. These readings are to inform you of different aspects of your car that are important for you to know. This information helps you to take care of your car and prevent further damage as well as know when to go to the gas station to fill up.

Another gauge in the instrument cluster is the speedometer. A speedometer tells you how fast you are going. This is a critical gauge for you to make sure that you are staying within the posted speed limits. Speed limits and staying within them helps to protect you and keep you from getting a ticket.

There may come a time when your speedometer cable wears out and it will need to be replaced. One of the signs of a bad speedometer cable, besides the gauge not working properly, is a large ticking sound that increases in speed as you do. The speedometer cable may just need to be lubricated, but it may also need to be replaced altogether.

For those people that fancy themselves mechanically inclined, you can likely change or grease the speedometer cable yourself. This can save you a lot of money if you can do this yourself. You will find the speedometer cable located behind the instrument cluster. You should have some knowledge and resources at your disposal before you try to remove the instrument cluster or the speedometer gauge.

Most speedometer clusters can be very easy to remove. If you have a screwdriver and know where the screws are that need to be removed, you can easily take out the speedometer. It can be helpful to consult your manual for help in understanding where the screws are that hold the speedometer cluster in place and that need to be removed

After the screws are out, you should be able to remove the speedometer cluster from the instrument cluster. This should then expose the cables behind the instrument cluster. Again, if you are not sure how to remove the speedometer cable from the speedometer refer to your car’s manual. Making a mistake in pulling the wrong cable or removing the speedometer cable incorrectly can lead to many extra hours of needless work, so be sure that you understand what to do before proceeding at this point.

If you are nervous about messing things up on your car, you are probably better off taking it to the auto repair shop and having them do it. If you do not have any auto mechanic experience and do not enjoy puzzles, then attempting this repair is likely to cause more stress than the money saved to do it on your own.

If you decide to have a professional do the job for you, search the internet to find auto mechanic shops near you and compare pricing. This will allow you to save as money as you can even though you are having an auto repair shop do it.

Everyone knows that a speedometer cluster is part of the car gauges , but replacing one is another story. Always remember to talk to the dealership you bought the car from if it is under warranty before doing anything.
