Tips For Choosing A Quality Car Insurance Plan
September 20, 2009
When it is time for choosing a quality car insurance plan you should keep a few things in mind.
Not all car insurance companies are alike. Some are not as likely to be able to pay a claim as others are. In order to tell the best car insurance companies, you will need to look at their ratings. Look for an insurance company rated A+ or better.
The second factor in choosing a quality car insurance plan is to choose a company that offers insurance plans that are important to you. For example, if you rent vehicles on a regular basis, you may want to find a company that offers insurance on rental vehicles. This can save you up to twenty-five dollars per day on auto rentals.
When you purchase insurance you will want to have a comprehensive packet that covers damage to your vehicle or injury to your passengers as well as liability coverage for any damage that you may cause.
An important consideration is medical coverage for the driver and all passengers in your vehicle in the event of an accident. Most health policies will not pay for health problems related to an accident. Instead, it is the auto policy that pays. If you do not have medical coverage for you and your passengers, you can add up a very expensive hospital bill.
Additionally, you will want to have adequate liability coverage to take care of injuries to persons in the other vehicles involved in an accident. Because of the rising costs of health care, state minimums for liability insurance are far from adequate. You should consider carrying at liability insurance in the amount of one million dollars. The cost difference is sometimes just a few pennies per month.
Some people choose car insurance based simply on cost. This is not the ideal way for choosing a quality car insurance plan. Often the difference between an okay car insurance plan and a quality car insurance plan is only a few dollars per month.
If you want to save money on a quality car insurance plan, consider paying the policy in full rather than having the policy broken up into monthly payments. Insurance companies are adding a monthly service charge for the convenience that may be five or more dollars per month. On a six month policy, that can add thirty dollars to the cost of the policy.
If you are able to pay the policy in full the first time you purchase it, then make monthly payments to a savings account for the next time the policy is due. Pay that service charge to yourself in the form of a savings account. You may end up with enough money to buy yourself a well deserved present. Go ahead, you have earned it.

Changing Your Car’s Appearance: Upgrade Your Sidelights
September 20, 2009
Whether you have HID xenon headlights or you switched out the standard halogen headlamp bulbs for the newest xenon you already know how clear and white the xenon light appears.
Unfortunately you have probably also noticed that the light from your sidelight bulbs appear a dull yellow colour in comparison and do not compliment your xenon bulbs. Fortunately there is wide range of upgrade sidelight bulbs that are brighter and whiter than standard bulbs and if you are feeling adventurous they can come in a range of colours
How Do Upgrade Sidelight Bulbs Differ From Ordinary Sidelight Bulbs?
The regular sidelight bulbs are produced based on quantity and inexpensive material, which means they use basic filament in a standard glass bulb, with motionless gas. Updated sidelight bulbs use the very best that technology has to offer, with high grade supplies and the very top of the line for filaments.
Most importantly the latest upgrade sidelight bulbs are filled with either xenon or halogen gas, which ensures that these upgrade bulbs produce a much brighter and crisper light, which more closely compliments HID xenon bulbs.
Are Blue Xenon Sidelights Available?
Clear sidelight bulbs are most common on vehicles because this was all one could get until now. Technology is advancing to provide us with a myriad of choices when it comes to sidelights. It is possible to update your sidelights to a xenon bulb with a glass blue tint. These are becoming extremely fashionable with motorists. There is one thing of import that you should know. The bulbs do have a tinting, which often is thought to emit a blue light. Instead, it actually reduces the yellow effect of most light production giving you a whiter look.
However, there are two aspects about these xenon tinted lights that you need to know. The first is that the ECE has rules regarding what amount of tinting can be used in blue sidelight bulbs. This is due to the heat generated by the bulb. As more heat is generated the more the light is reduced. Therefore, the ECE rules have a limit to the levels of blue tint that is considered street legal.
The second factor is that the tinted glass will keep some of the light from being used, thus it is hotter than your regular clear glass bulb. So blue tint that is too dark will produce too high a temperature and burn out faster.
LED Sidelight Bulbs Are They Suitable For My Car?
Xenon are certainly powerful light bulbs, but for sidelight bulbs they are not the only option. LED technology is becoming more common place especially in vehicles like the Porsche 997 or Audi R8. LED means light emitting diode. There are several reasons you might want LED over regular glass bulbs for your car.
LED sidelight bulbs are incredibly tough and durable and so normally last for over 50,000 hours, draw much less power and produce a much brighter and more intense light than standard car bulbs, and are available in range of colours.
It is quite simpler to change your standard sidelight bulbs out for LED bulbs. The LED bulbs have been created to fit into the holders and connectors of the original lights without any need for modification.
Renovating your original bulbs for xenon or LED bulbs can really improve the look of your vehicle at night. The light produced will be more brilliant and cleaner than the standard option, complementing your upgraded xenon headlight bulbs. If you install LED lights you will also have a longer lasting bulb. In fact you will probably upgrade your vehicle long before the LED lights need to change.
Fitting new Sidelight Bulbs is a great way to upgrade your car lights and give your vehicle a unique appearance to stand out from the crowd. The latest 501 LED bulbs produce a brighter light than standard 501 bulbs, come in a range of colours and should last the lifetime of the car.
Do It Yourself Engine Oil Analysis: Water Ingression Test
September 20, 2009
You’re about to read an article regarding test 2 of 6 total do it yourself tests that you can run on your used engine oil without the need for any special training or equipment.
If you happen to be an individual who owns a vehicle that is driven infrequently, is commonly driven for short distances and/or is driven or stored in a humid area or one that often has wide temperature swings, then the performance of a crackle test would likely prove useful. This is a simple test which will clearly indicate if condensation has caused water build-up in your oil.
Why a water test? Because water doesn’t lubricate very well and because water build-up leads to the build-up of acids in your oil. Acid causes corrosion which leads to pitting. You don’t want pitting inside your engine. Even a high TBN extended drain synthetic oil like AMSOIL can eventually be overcome by water/acid build-up. Thus, as a general rule, you’d probably want to know if you were getting water in your oil BEFORE acid build-up depletes the acid fighting additives in your oil. THIS is why I recommend performing the crackle test.
It is worth noting that fuel in your oil can cause some confusion in the results of this test. Performing the blotter spot test (business card test) beforehand will indicate whether you have fuel dilution. If you do, then water ingression is irrelevant and the crackle test is likely unnecessary. The fuel dilution alone may be reason enough to consider changing your oil, if it is severe enough and/or causing any other issues.
So, how do you do it? Simple. Find a hotplate of some kind. Set the temperature between 250 and 300 degrees F (which is greater than the boiling point of water – 212 – but lower than the typical volatility level of a motor oil – which is generally greater than 350). Then, place a few drops of oil on the plate.
At that temp, when you place the oil on the plate, you’ll hear a crackle as the water boils off. You should hear it very quickly as long as you use only a small amount of oil. Of course, if you have no water in your oil, there will be no crackle.
Obviously, this is not a very informative test, and it won’t tell you how much water you’ve got in your oil, as a professionally performed oil analysis will, but, it can still provide you with some useful, free information.
