RV Camping Is The Next Step After Automotive Camping

September 26, 2009

When I was a young man I would hike and camp under the stars. I loved to go places I had never been before. But I will admit as I am a bit older now, I do enjoy R.V. camping.

RV’s are available in many sizes and shapes. The smallest is a camper shell that fits in the back of a pick-up truck. Although they may be small there is a lot of convenience in a very small area.

The next step up is a van conversion. A class B motor home is simply a cargo van that is used as a camping vehicle. Sometimes the roof is raised a bit to offer more head room.

The class C motor home looks like a pick-up in the front end. There is a sleeping area over the cab, the back end looks like a motor home. The class C has all the comforts of home. A bathroom, kitchen, living room and bedroom. You could live comfortable in a class C.

The next larger version is the class A. These motor homes are like a mini one bedroom apartment, the roomiest of all the RV’s. They are completely self contained from the queen sized bed to the dinette that seats four people in luxury.

Class A motor homes are usually equipped with a refrigerator and stove, some have a microwave oven. There may even be an ice maker, some models are capable of producing 20 pounds a day.

There are also travel trailers that hook to a regular trailer hitch and have a pop up top. If you would like to go a little larger there is the fifth wheel trailer that is towed through a hitch in the bed of a pick-up. Either of these two choices are extravagant and they are much cheaper than a motor home.

If you are not sure that camping is for you, start off small maybe even a used camper to get the feel of the situation. But which ever way you decide to go you should learn all you can about RV’ing before hand. There are RV forums online that you can ask question of and receive a lot of valuable information.

A Look At Operating Under The Influence

September 26, 2009

For many, the reference to operating under the influence is automatically associated with drinking and driving. However, many fail to realize that drugs affect people in the same way alcohol does and that means you can be fined even for just driving after taking prescription medication.

Due to the devastation if an 18 wheeler could cause if in an accident it is mandatory for truckers who hold a CDL license to be required to be tested for drugs and a risk trucking companies don’t want to risk.

There are studies which clearly show that 15% of truck drivers who travel interstate have marijuana in their system and another 5% had taken prescription stimulants, whereas 2% had taken cocaine and just 1% had consumed alcohol. These are all OUI crimes.

The driver does not have to be drunk to be over the limit. The blood alcohol count (BAC) is 0.08% or higher. For truck drivers, it is 0.04%, because they are operating a bigger vehicle and they have long routes.

There is a misconception that being high on marijuana is safer than alcohol but that just is not the case. Marijuana is said to affect your concentration, perception and reaction time for possibly as long as 24 hours versus a 3-4 hour span for alcohol depending on the amount consumed. Marijuana has been the cause in more than 12% of trucking accidents that were fatal.

Truck drivers work long shifts and sometimes it is hard for them to stay awake. Therefore, they want to get something for it, such as meth or ice. It is very easy for truckers to get hold of those drugs at truck stops. Surveys show that 1 in 5 truckers use those hardcore drugs so they can stay awake.

Truckers are watched very hard and will be pulled over by law enforcement if they are even suspicious that they are intoxicated. Law enforcement will not tolerate it and have tools to test if they are. These are a breathalyzer, a field sobriety test and swab drug test you and search you.

One of the tests law enforcement uses to see if the driver has been drinking and how much is the breathalyzer in which you blow into it. The other is called the nystagmus test. This has various aspects to it. You can be asked to walk and turn, stand on one leg, put your finger to your nose and the Romberg balance test. Another sobriety test is when an officer puts an object, a pen for example, in front of the face and while moving it back and forth watches the driver’s eyes. Then a chemical test can be done which consists of urine or blood samples.

The swab test is done by taking a sample of saliva from the suspect’s mouth in which if it comes back “hot” then you are driving OUI.

Therefore, it is not good for anyone to operate under the influence, especially truckers. Drinking or doing any, kind of drugs is not safe when you are going to be behind a wheel.
