Understanding DUI

October 5, 2009

Most people have known or heard of someone they know being arrested for DUI. Though everyone has heard the term “DUI” most do not comprehend exactly what it is.

One misconception is that you can only be cited while driving a car, which is wrong. Operating motorcycles, boats, trucks and planes are subject to DUI charges, also. DUI means “Driving Under the Influence”, but many refer to it as drunk driving and that is not correct. Drunk driving is alcohol related whereas DUI involves other drugs legal, or not.

DUI’s are treated as a criminal offense, which increases the severity of the consequences. The primary reason for this is that when you get your driver’s license, you have to pass a written test where you display your knowledge of what driving under the influence can bring about. Additionally, when you are caught for a DUI, you are not simply putting yourself at risk, but you are actually putting everyone else on the road at significant risk.

Normally the BAC, or blood alcohol content, is what ultimately determines a DUI. However, that is not the only possible way for a DUI conviction to take place. It is important to know what your local legal BAC limits are at any time, because these can vary by state.

Again though, not only traditional alcoholic beverages can lead to your conviction of DUI. If you are under the influence of illicit drugs, you are impaired and should not be driving. Some prescription drugs indicate that you should not operate machinery while taking them. If you choose to get behind the wheel then you may be putting yourself and others at risk.

However, perhaps the oddest way that you can get a DUI is actually with something that seems nearly harmless. Cough syrups and cold medicines often have alcohol as an ingredient. If you take too much and then get on the road, your blood alcohol level might be above the legal limit.

Once you have been arrested for a DUI, you have a variety of consequences that you could be facing. Again, as each state has different rules you cannot expect the same consequences from state to state. However, some of the most common punishments include fines, license suspensions and restrictions, probation, and even jail time.

Finally, there is the consequence you don’t think of and that is your automobile insurance. If you are arrested for a DUI and convicted you will have to fill out an SR-22 form and your insurance company may opt to drop you and since you are now “high risk” you also face higher premiums and deductibles because you are considered high risk.

Radar Detectors – Why You Need Them

October 5, 2009

Have you ever had the experience of happily driving along, confident that your radar detector is on to alert you of cops on the look out for speeding motorists, only to be jolted out of your blissful enjoyment of the ride by being pulled over for speeding? The sad fact is that most of the radar detectors that are in the market right now are not all that they are touted to be. Further, cops now use new models of radar guns and that is the reason why your radar detector failed to do its job.

The police utilize radar guns that have digital signal processing (DSP) technology. DSP allows the radar guns to constantly be on just waiting to read a cars speed. This allows radar guns to measure the speed in less than four tenths of a second. You have absolutely no hope of stopping in time to prevent a speeding ticket.

Coupled with this new speed is a lower power footprint that previous detectors. Modern radar guns use Ka band frequency, which uses a very high bandwidth, which is more than fifty times higher than previous, X band radar guns. This means that detectors have a much harder time finding the signal from radar guns.

Your radar detector is set to scan the entire bandwidth spectrum in order to try to detect a radar gun. This process can be lengthy and does not adequately detect all of the vast ranges that the police radar gun can be set at. Ultimately this makes your radar detector virtually useless to you.

Another advantage the police have in regards to their radar guns is the guns ability to detect the highest speeding vehicle within its range. This is unlike the old radar guns that had to measure each cars speed individually. So no more hiding behind a larger vehicle to avoid detection of your speed.

There is more bad news for you if you always tend to drive fast. As the old X band radar guns go out of use and are replaced by the latest model radar guns, the radar detectors will become less and less effective.

Its time to start researching the new improved radar detectors that are available. When doing this research it is important to know where most of your driving occurs, whether it is on the highway or in the city. City driving requires a radar detector that is able to filter out all of the other frequency information while still being able to detect police radar.

The reality is that radar guns will keep improving and the detectors will have to keep pace with such improvements. All this means is that no matter what type of detector you choose now, it will soon become inefficient and you will have to change it. No radar detector can last you for ever in these times of continuous technological evolution.
