Harley Davidson 883 – A Motorcycle Icon

October 26, 2009

For more than 50 years now Harley Davidson have been producing a motorcycle known as the Sportster. But it was not until 1986 that they first produced the one we now know as the Harley 883 and which for those of us who dream of owning one of these iconic motorcycles is well within their grasp as they are the least expensive of all the models that Harley Davidson now produce.

Currently there are 8 different types of Harley Davidson Sportster motorcyles available and in this article we will be taking a close look at the 4 that come into the 883 category. As well as these four motorcycles there are 3 1200 Sportster Harley Davidson’s and the XL50. This particular bike was introduced to the market this year as a celebration of the Sportster being in production for 50 years now.

The four versions of the 883 Sportster that are now offered by one of the most well recognized custom motorcycles in the world today are as follows:-

1. XL Sportster 833 – which is the least expensive of all these models available and will cost between $6,595 and $7,990. 2. XL Sportster 833 Low – this bike although is slightly more expensive than the original version will only cost you between $6,995 and $8,390. 3. XL Sportster 883 Custom – another really great looking version of this model and will only cost between $7,795 and $9,555. 4. XL Sportster 883R – This is the final version of this particular model of Harley Davidson motorcycle now available and will cost you anything from $7,795 and up to as much as $9,090.

Along with Harley Davidson producing 4 different models of this particular motorcycle they have spent time making improvements to each one in order to improve the ride on them. Today all come with a larger rear axle which has made the bikes much more stable. They have also spent time on improving the mounting of the engines within the motorcycles. Today all Harley Davidson engines are mounted on to rubber that is placed on the frame and this reduces the amount of vibration the rider will feel.

As well as the changes made to the 883 Harley mentioned above Harley Davidson have made several notable changes not just to these models but all of their motorcycles. Gone is the chain drive system for spinning the rear wheel and has been replaced with a belt drive system. Also they have now put a helical cut gear transmission unit in all their bikes, which results in less gear whine noises being made by them. Whilst the other change to be made and which occurred this year is that the engines are now fuel injected rather than being carburetted.

For those who are looking for one of these iconic motorcycles which won’t end up costing them a small fortune this may be the ideal bike for them. As with all Harley Davidson’s the 883 models provide you with the same ride quality and prestige that the more expensive models offer. So why shouldn’t they seriously consider getting themselves one of these.

For those of you who want to feel the wind rushing past your face as you smoothly glide along the roads in a position that has become famous around the world then why not seriously consider getting yourself a Harley 883.
