My Used Jeep Memories

October 29, 2009

I spent my elementary years in a rustic place in the highlands of a mountainous province in the Philippines. It wasn’t that far but because of the road conditions back then, the nearest city is about 6 hours away, and it would take 8 hours to reach my hometown.

My grandfather was a former city boy who later in his life opted and has grown to love rural living. About once a month he would take us back to our city hometown to visit our relatives. Back in the city during those days, I would envy those who were in cars with rolled up windows and air conditioning. I would often dream of one day traveling and arriving in my hometown in a brand new automobile enclosed and protected from dust and heat.

You can imagine how amazed I am when people would approach my grandfather and rave how awesome our ride is. They would say they can’t believe how easy and quick it is for us to get to the city from where we came from. I could even remember then telling my grandpa that they would trade their brand new cars for my grandfather’s old and reliable jeep. Are these people serious? What they have are brand new automobiles and we have a second hand contraption.

That old jeep was bought second hand by my grandfather. He had it repainted a deep brown first and foremost to give it a new look. The jeep didn’t have comfortable front seats originally so grandpa found this front seats from an old car and had it reupholstered.

The trips we took with the jeep were absolutely long ones. Grandpa always had gasoline rations back then from his company. Some were gifts from some uncles i have. He always had that kind of effect on people. People would always love to please my grandfather. The original tank was too small for our trips and all his rations so he found this huge tank from an old truck and had it installed under the front seats of the jeep. It took up all of the front row area.

He had new leather roofings installed on the jeep. Had an electric fan and he even had his small portable TV attached to our rig. I had to admit, despite my wanting a new automobile for a ride, looking back, we did had an awesome ride.

The jeep served me from the third grade, and I remembered my grandpa took me to the airport when I was leaving to attend college in the capital. It served me then for more than a decade already. When I came home after graduation, sadly he was too old to make the trip. The jeep was still serving him though.

That old jeep might have been pre-owned when we got it, but it fared and served better than all the other vehicles that we had. It has by far exceeded all the others when it came to performance and the memories we had with that old timer is by far more precious than any other ride we had.

Truly, used cars if loved and cared for can prove to be of greater value than new ones. Ours was by far the most precious ride of all.

Learning To Drive: How You Can Help Your Teenage Child With This

October 29, 2009

Do you still remember the angst you went through when your father allowed you to get behind the steering wheel of his car for the first time? How your hands trembled when you fastened the safety belt? How you pressed the wrong button to adjust the rear-view mirror? When you turned the key for the first time, and you heard the sound of the engine coming alive, you wanted to jump out and run, but a strange excitement kept you glued to the seat.

Below we give some information so you can make this time of his/her life a little less daunting and a lot more fun for your teenage son or daughter.

A crucial tip is not to try and do everything at once. If you take it one skill at a time, it will take a lot of the tension out of the process for him. It’s very important that you should not allow the student to drive the car under any circumstances before he is fully trained in the position and function of all the major controls of the car. It can cause his death if he should one day end up in a crisis, and can’t remember how to switch on the lights, or where to switch on the windscreen wipers. Also make sure he knows the rules of road by heart before switching on the car for the first time.

The next step is to find an empty parking lot, and go there after hours when things are quiet. There your student can practice to start the car, pull away and stop the car again.

Starting off with parking skills is not a bad idea. This will give the student a feeling for how the car reacts to turning the wheel, braking etc. Reverse parking is never easy for a learner driver, so let him practice this many times over, even if he gets bored.

Something else that does not come naturally to a new drive is to slow down BEFORE you get to a curve, and how far from a stop sign you have to start slowing down and apply the brakes. Discuss this with him before you even leave the parking area and venture into traffic. One of the most terrifying experiences for a learner drive is to stop at a stop street, and then pull away while there is a car coming in the distance. It is therefore better to practice this after hours, in a quiet part of town.

Another thing that is very scary is knowing how to deal with people walking across the road, bicycles moving right in front of you, and other cars changing lanes without warning. This can be life threatening if your child should panic and do something stupid, so discuss this with him before actually venturing into the traffic, and start off where you will encounter this, but not on a bewildering scale.

Something that few driving schools or instructors concentrate on, is to prepare the student for unusual circumstances and conditions. Driving in the rain or snow, or at night, or where there are road works require particular skill, and you must not lose your presence of mind in such a situation. It’s hard to prepare someone for something not even you can foresee, so it’s probably a good idea to get a professional driving instruction video that covers this, and to watch it together with your student. You can then discuss the conditions it portrays and what a proper reaction would be under each set of circumstances. This is a better way of learning to drive than losing your life while trying.

Choosing The Right ATV Trailer

October 28, 2009

It’s very difficult to make decision to buy ATV trailers, when you see many choices. This article gives you guidance to select a perfect one that fulfill your requirements. There is misconception to use terms trailer, wagon and cart interchangeably. Actually these 3 terms are basically different in nature.

The trailer has a non-steerable front end and explains a unit with one to several axles. Designing of these units is based on towing a vehicle. Rigid front end keeps the unit straight while brakes applied. Therefore, trailer depends on the tow vehicles brake system in most cases.

A single axle cart is designed and linked with a tow vehicle to move as a wheelbarrow when ever needed. The cart don’t have its own braking system, basically it depends on tow vehicle braking system in most cases. Hard/strong front end enable cart to remain straighten during braking.

Due to a wagon’s own steerable front end, it can be controlled directly behind of the tow vehicle. However, handling steerable front end is quite difficult. As compared to cart a wagon can be turn to the side easily wherever required.

Some people’s understanding is that ATV trailers works like a lawn trailer. It is fact that such types of trailers are available in market and those people, who purchase them, feel that they made a wrong decision. To differentiate a quality ATV trailer or cart from lawn trailer it should have several additional items over lawn trailer.

For a quality ATV trailer roller bearing is an important feature that allows it to travel on higher speed. It should also have mounted axle for prevention of axle failure in rough route/land. In some quality ATV larger ATV tires at low pressure being used to absorb the shock.

Wood, steel and poly wood are commonly used in the cargo beds of ATV trailers due to its advantage of being easily replacement in case of lost. Main advantage of using steel is that it can be painted and use with lower gauge number. In past poly cargo beds was intruded to overcome the problem of cracking and breaking in cold weather.

Rotting of wood and rusting of steel give preference to use poly because it do not have such disadvantage. Aluminum is also used for this purpose, but if draw back of such material is that in some cases white-corrosion with bare aluminum exposed to the weather and dissimilarity due to decay. Mostly this happened when steel bolts are in contact with aluminum.

What affects The Gasoline Prices

October 28, 2009

Rising gasoline prices may just make other forms of alternative means of transportation become more attractive. One of the ways not to be affected by the rising prices of gas is to have an alternative means of travel. Of course, saving up on gasoline use may help in some way, but such actions may still leave one affected with the rising prices of gas. A better way would be trying to use a mode of transportation aside from one that makes use of fuel aside from gasoline. One such example is the use of an electric car.

As the sudden rise in gasoline prices have made people become more concerned, it would also be very important to know about the different factors that give rise to such increases in the first place. There are four main elements that affect the pricing of gasoline in the retail market, primary of which is the price of crude oil in the world market.

Crude oil is the initial raw material from where gasoline is refined and derived from. Crude oil, a majority of it, is sourced and supplied from Middle East countries. It is these countries that have control over the price of crude oil in the world market. Countries that get their crude oil supply from these oil producing countries are the most affected by the sudden increase in crude oil prices. Overall, crude oil pricing affects about 75 percent of the price tag for gasoline in the retail market.

There are usually ports to go through as well as miles and miles of inland pipelines where it eventually reaches a main depot. From this depot, the gasoline may then be transported to the different gas stations by means of distribution trucks. With the distribution process this complex, having the gasoline supply far away from a certain gas station may eventually affect how its retail price may be formulated.

Aside from the price of crude oil and refining costs, distribution costs also account for a great deal of the retail price of gasoline in the market. Aside from shipping and overseas transport costs, distributing gasoline to the different gasoline stations in the area may also account for the retail price of the gasoline. Some areas may have some difficulties obtaining their gasoline supply due to distance as well as accessibility while some have it easy because of being in close proximity to major gas depots. It is through this that gas prices may also differ from one area to another. Distribution also affects the gasoline retail price.

In an area having just a few gas retail stations available, the gasoline prices would tend to be higher. The reason for this is that the demand would still be a bit greater with only a few retail stations able to provide the supply. In some cases, the consumer may be made to choose- whether to buy cheaper gasoline to a retail station location many miles away or buy gas from a nearer station offering more expensive gasoline prices. And will this rising casoline prices effect cars quotes in the future?

Important Facts About Tire Size

October 27, 2009

There are many reasons why knowing about your car tire size is important. For one, you don’t want to get the wrong tire size. How do you find out your size and what do the size figures stand for?

Size Importance

It’s a big mistake to try to fit the wrong sized tires on your car. A lot of things can happen. At the very least you can reduce the performance capacity of a car that would ordinarily work fine with the right tires. You therefore get less for what you bargained for. More importantly though, ill-fitting tires can be the cause of accidents and on-road mishaps. These can result in injuries and life threatening situations. You should never underestimate the value of proper sized tires.

How to Find the Size

You can identify your tire size in many ways. The most logical place to start is to look into your car manual. You can however also find the size of the tires on the placard on the driver’s door or on the sidewall of the tire itself. If you are online and you do not have your car beside you, you can log on to some websites that will allow you to enter your vehicle type and model to find the size that will fit it.

What the Figures Say

If you look at your tire’s sidewall, you will see a series of letters and numbers. These constitute your complete tire size information. It may seem like a foreign language but the letters and numbers stand for important information that you may have to keep in mind.

- The beginning letter tells you what kind of vehicle the tire may be used for. It could be intended for a passenger vehicle, light trucks, heavy cargo trucks and European cars. Some tires can also be designated as temporary spares. Following its intended use will be numbers that stand for the tire’s width in millimeters.

- Aspect ratio, tire construction, tire and wheel diameter, load index and speed rating are the other information that your tire can tell you.

Asking Your Dealer

Even if you have all the information from your tire’s sidewall, you may not find it enough. You may also be uncertain that you can interpret the information correctly. If this is the case, you should consider asking your tire dealer.

Choose your tire dealer, though. You need one who has had considerable tire knowledge. A good tire dealer will look into your type of vehicle, brand, driving conditions and your personal performance preferences before giving you some advice on the right tires to use. This means you need customer oriented employees who are more than just salespeople but tire and car experts as well.

You can never be too sure with your tire size. When in doubt, the safest route is to ask experts for advice and help.

Know where you can get different tire sizes. Find tire dealers online.

Currently there are 8 different types of Harley Davidson Sportster motorcyles available and in this article we will be taking a close look at the 4 that come into the 883 category. As well as these four motorcycles there are 3 1200 Sportster Harley Davidson’s and the XL50. This particular bike was introduced to the market this year as a celebration of the Sportster being in production for 50 years now.

The four versions of the 883 Sportster that are now offered by one of the most well recognized custom motorcycles in the world today are as follows:-

1. XL Sportster 833 – which is the least expensive of all these models available and will cost between $6,595 and $7,990. 2. Today all Harley Davidson engines are mounted on to rubber that is placed on the frame and this reduces the amount of vibration the rider will feel.

As well as the changes made to the 883 Harley mentioned above Harley Davidson have made several notable changes not just to these models but all of their motorcycles. Gone is the chain drive system for spinning the rear wheel and has been replaced with a belt drive system. Also they have now put a helical cut gear transmission unit in all their bikes, which results in less gear whine noises being made by them. Whilst the other change to be made and which occurred this year is that the engines are now fuel injected rather than being carburetted.

For those who are looking for one of these iconic motorcycles which won’t end up costing them a small fortune this may be the ideal bike for them. As with all Harley Davidson’s the 883 models provide you with the same ride quality and prestige that the more expensive models offer.
