Tire Troubles: Grandma’s To Grandkids’
January 16, 2010
My car needs new Utah tires right away. In contrast, this reminds me of my Grandmother-who, for a short while in the late 1920s, was homeless with her three young daughters, living in her car. My Grandma, ever feisty, occasionally pulled off the road with a flat tire. Unassisted, she jacked up the car, removed the tire, took it all apart, patched the hole, got it back together, got air in it, put it back on the car, un-jacked the car, and got back on the road.
Grandma’s tire troubles were much worse than mine, which first started in the late 60s. I learned how to change tires at 16 years old. That was good because many times in the next two decades I was pulling off deserted farm roads, having to change flat tires by myself. By that time tires weren’t driver-patchable any longer, so I took my flats into service stations for patching, thankfully. Tires, by that time, were bias-ply, meaning their outside rubber casings were reinforced by “plys” of rubberized cords of fabric in diagonal layering across the tire. They don’t make bias-ply tires anymore, except as authentic replacements for antique vehicles.
Bias-ply tires finally phased out in the 80s due to the superior steel-belted radial tire finally taking over-as they had done in Europe decades earlier. Radial tires are built with strong ply cords that radiate from the rim at 90 degree angles and have steel-fabric-reinforced casings around their circumferences. Radial tires are known to allow better gas mileage, better steering, and longer-lasting tread.
The thing I noticed fairly quickly about radials was that bias-ply-tire-flattening road scrap, such as nails and screws, didn’t create radial tire troubles. The steel belts of radial tires seemed to effectively stop most of those pesky little intruders from intruding. But the few that did make it through my steel belts over the next 20 years or so didn’t ever cause me to have to change a tire. I was always able to get to a service station in time to add air. Because we had steel-belted radials, I never got around to teaching my children how to change a flat. My boys changed a few blown tires; my girls were all good-Samaritan-saved. And my grandchildren were even less tire-troubled than my children were.
AAA roadside service plans have been around for decades, but now there are even insurance companies and maintenance agreements that have free tire-changing services. (I’ve never used mine for tire changing in all of ten years.) Another factor in the disappearance of tire troubles is how some Utah tire shops stand behind their tire products. When these Utah tire shops sell us tires, they also give us free regular tire rotations, flat fixes, re-balancing, and road-hazard insurance. Novice drivers today have no idea what tire troubles used to exist. I’m just happy that I can forget about my tire troubles of the past as I drive over to my favorite Utah tire dealer.

Cars That Are Less Expensive To Insure
January 16, 2010
Buying a car involves a number of costs other than the actual purchase price of the car. One such cost is car insurance. Often people do not consider the cost of insurance when they are searching for a car. Many people do not realize that the price of car insurance will vary from car to car. Because car insurance can be expensive, it is important to understand why it is expensive to insure some cars over others as it can affect the price one pays by hundreds of dollars.
The type of car that you drive affects the price you will pay for auto insurance. Rates are based on a particular car’s make and model. A car with a low loss history will be cheaper to insure. For instance, if you purchase a brand new car that has no record of accident and other damage claims, the rate you pay will usually be based on the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Then rates will be adjusted on loss history over time
Insurers will also asses such features as horsepower-to-weight ratio and adjust the insurance rate accordingly. The more high performance cars will tend to have higher premiums. As well, the car’s history of vehicle safety will affect premiums. Cars with a good record of safety will have lower auto insurance rates. This is why larger cars and minivans tends to be one of the most least-expensive vehicles to insure. The car repair history, the safety record of the car such as the number of instances of accidents, and size of the car, all are assessed when determining the premiums one will pay.
One of the least expensive cars to insure is the Smart fortwo which is made by Mercedes-Benz. This small two door coupe comes with 71 horsepower engine and has a fuel economy range of 33 mpg in the city. It also has a low collision loss record. The 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe is another car that is cheap to insure. The Highway Loss Data Institute notes that the Santa Fe has a low record of comprehensive insurance loss and low personal injury and collision protection insurance claims.
The following are a list of a few of the least expensive cars to insure: Hyundai Entourage, Hyundai Santa Fe, $832 , Saturn VUE, $911, Chrysler Town and Country, $915, Smart Fortwo, $881, Honda Odyssey, Mazda Tribute, $913, $871, Kia Rio5, $870, Kia Sportage, $840, and Kia Sedona, $857.
Other cheap cars to insure include: GMC Safari, Chrysler PT Cruiser 4dr Wagon, Pontiac Solstice, Pontiac Sunfire 2dr Coupe, Volvo S40 4dr Sedan, Honda Civic, Buick LeSabre, GMC Safari SLE AWD 3dr Minivan, Dodge Caravan SE 4dr Minivan, Ford Taurus (station wagon), Buick Century Special Edition 4dr Sedan, Dakota Quad Cab, Saab 38600 Linear 2.3t 4dr Sport Wagon, Volvo XC90, Saturn L300 1 4dr Sedan, Jeep Liberty Sport 4WD 4dr SUV, and Pontiac Montana.
In this troubled economy, we can all benefit from saving extra cash. If you are on a tight budget and are looking for a new vehicle, choosing a car that has low insurance premiums can save you hundreds of dollars a year.
Due to its convenience, purchasing auto insurance online is gaining popularity in the modern age. In any case, auto insurance is an essential asset for all automotive owners.
Do You Need Towing Services?
January 16, 2010
Whenever an inoperable vehicle needs to be moved from point a to point b, towing services can come to the rescue. They should have the equipment to safely move the vehicle without causing further damage to it or other property. There may be situations where you need towing Toronto.
Vehicles can become inoperable when they have mechanical problems. Sometimes, it is only a small problem such as a starter motor going out that causes the vehicle to not run. Other times it may be a major problem such as a blown engine or the transmission going out of the car. In either case, a tow truck is able to lift the drive wheels of your automobile and get it from your home to the repair shop where it can be put back in running condition.
An automobile accident can result in a car that cannot be driven. Even if the auto is damaged to the point that it cannot be repaired, it can normally be loaded onto a truck and transported to a storage yard until the insurance company can make their determination and help you to get a replacement.
If you are driving in poor road conditions, it is possible that you can lose control of your vehicle and end up in a ditch or snow bank. While your auto is still operable, you are unable to get the needed traction to get that vehicle on the road. In this case, you may need winch out services to get your vehicle unstuck and back on the road.
There are also times that business owners need towing services. If you have problems with vehicles that do not belong to customers or unauthorized vehicles being left in your parking lots, many of these services offer impound towing. The service will place warning signs on your property and make regular patrols after business hours to enforce your parking policy. If a car or truck is violating the policy, it is impounded and the offending automobile will be impounded. The owner must then pay towing and storage in order to get a vehicle back.
Unfortunately, during times of economic hardship, some lenders are having to employ the services of a tow truck to repossess a vehicle when the lender is unable to keep up with the payments. While neither the lender nor the vehicle owner want this to happen, it is often the only way for the lender to retrieve the collateral on a loan.
When a vehicle needs to be transported, the safest way is often for it to be winched onto a truck so that all four wheels are safely on the bed of the truck. Most of the trucks have a bed that may be hydraulically inclined and lowered to form a ramp. Once your vehicle is on the ramp, the ramp can be moved back into position and your vehicle can be secured into place. This will prevent damage to the transmission of your car.
In an ideal world, you would not need towing services, however in the world in which we live, you will be glad that they are there when you have difficulties and need to have a vehicle moved.
