Your Concise Tutorial On Rural Life

March 27, 2010

There are so many changes going on in our cities these days in the hopes of attracting more people to move there. Condos, river walks and restaurants are transforming derelict areas into smart addresses.

There is a lot to be said for living in the city. You rarely have to drive and everything is on your doorstep.

The efforts our cities have been making to attract us to live there have been huge, and in some have been quite successful.

There are some people who wouldn’t consider living in the city for a second. They love driving, the peace and quiet and being able to go for long walks with having to dodge hundreds of people.

This goes both ways though, as those who want to move to the country to escape city life also find it a major culture shock. What if you run out of milk or bread? You may have quite a drive to a store, whereas in the city you were never more than a couple of blocks away.

If you are seriously thinking of giving up city living a and moving out to a smallholding to lead a real country lifestyle there is a lot to consider. You will still need to visit large supermarkets to get your groceries in bulk and make sure you get everything you will need for at least a week as this will be a long trip that you don’t want to do 3-4 times a week.

You should always have a stockpile of goods that won’t perish in case your weekly trip has to be delayed for some reason. These include things like toilet rolls and toiletries, canned and frozen foods and cough and cold remedies.

This may seem basic but it can take some people a while to get into the habit of only shopping once a week as they are so used to just picking things up on the way home.

Maximise Your Car Lights with Upgrade Car Bulbs

March 27, 2010

Osram is a chief creator of car light merchandise. Their goods are often used as the standard bulb for top auto manufacturers. It is not widely known, but Osram has more than their 12 volt headlight options. In fact they have just improved their variety of light bulbs for motorists, by offering better lighting and style performance to their bulbs.

Currently there are three types of upgrade headlight bulbs available called Osram Cool Blue, Osram Silver Star and Osram Night Breaker. All of these upgrade bulbs are completely road legal and come with the European testing standards E1 mark, and because they are designed to replace your standard headlight bulbs they will fit into your existing headlight bulb holders and therefore do not need any special tools to fit them or modifications.

Before deciding on either the Osram Silverstar, Osram Cool Blue or Osram Nightbreaker bulbs, you will need to find out which type of headlight bulbs you already have fitted in your vehicle. Normally you can find this information listed in the owners manual, although if you type Car Bulbs Finders into Google there are now a lot of good online automotive bulb retailers that have an interactive car bulbs guide built into the site.

The Osram Cool Blue series are designed for drivers who want to stand out from the crowd and give their headlights a really distinctive night time look. The Cool Blue bulbs have blue filtered glass, which emits a blue tinted light that is very similar to high intensity discharge xenon bulbs.

There are ECE rules which limit the degree of blue light your headlights are allowed to have. Osram Cool Blue bulbs are dark and street legal, and one of the only ones you can find.

Osram Silver Star lights help increase visibility for night time driving. They are also much better than halogen headlights that come standard in cars. The Osram Silver Star produces 50 percent more light on the road at the 50 to 75 metre range. This helps drivers react to dangers, obstacles, or road signs quicker.

The flagship of the Osram upgrade headlight bulbs range is the Osram Night Breaker series, which uses pressurised xenon gas, instead of halogen, and a re-engineered filament. The results is an award winning headlight bulb that produces 90% more light, projects 35 meters further into the darkness and is 10% whiter.

The keen driver who wants the best visibility and product will want the Osram Night Breaker bulbs.

Upgrading your standard headlight bulbs is a great way to improve night time safety and visibility and with the Osram Cool Blue, Osram Silverstar or Osram Nightbreaker series there should always be a bulb to suit your requirements.

If you want to maximise the light from your headlights you should upgrade to Xenon Bulbs, which produce nearly twice as much light as ordinary halogen bulbs. Modern xenon bulbs, like the Osram Night Breaker range, will transform your car lights to make night driving a more pleasurable experience.

Your Car’s Engine: Factors That Influence How Long It Lasts

March 27, 2010

Your car’s engine is arguably one of the most important assemblies under the hood. It is responsible for converting fuel into energy, and harnessing that energy for propulsion. It accomplishes this task through a 4-stroke combustion process that relies upon the seamless operation of dozens of other components. Your fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, pistons, and spark plugs are a few of the many parts involved.

Over time, the individual components that make up your engine will suffer wear and tear, and begin to fail. While these parts can be replaced to keep your vehicle on the road, age will eventually take its toll; at some point, you’ll need to replace the entire assembly. The key is to make it last as long as possible. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the factors that can shorten your engine’s life.

Insufficient Supply Of Oil

Oil is important for two reasons. First, it’s necessary for the lubrication of your engine’s moving parts. During operation, the bearings, rods, and pistons create intense heat. If there is insufficient oil, these components will eventually seize, causing your engine to fail.

The second reason oil is important is because it transfers heat away from the assembly. Here too, a sufficient supply is critical. Otherwise, heat would build up within your engine and cause it to overheat.

You should manually check your oil level every two or three weeks. If, for some reason, the level is low, replenish it. If you notice the level regularly declines more quickly than it should, have a mechanic check for leaks.

Lack Of Ongoing Maintenance

Maintenance in the context of your car’s engine requires very little manual effort. It’s mostly a matter of following the service intervals listed in your owner’s manual and addressing problems when they occur. Regular maintenance includes changing the oil every 5,000 miles, replacing the spark plugs every 50,000 miles, and changing the timing belt every 60,000 miles. These intervals are merely guidelines and should be considered secondary to the recommendations in your owner’s manual.

Fuel, Compression, And Spark Problems

Your engine’s operation depends largely on fuel, compression, and spark. If too much fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber, the air-fuel mixture will be too rich. If too little fuel makes it into the chamber, the mixture will be too lean. Both circumstances can lead to detonation. The air-fuel mix ignites in an erratic fashion, causing damage to the cylinder’s piston.

Compression is necessary for your engine to create a sufficient amount of pressure within the combustion chamber. This pressure allows the fuel to burn smoothly during ignition. If there is a significant compression leak, your engine will be less capable of burning the fuel efficiently. This can lead to misfires, hard starting, and a reduction of output.

When the air-fuel mixture in your cylinder’s combustion chamber has been compressed, it requires a spark for ignition. Most people believe the spark plug is solely responsible for delivering this spark. In reality, there are several components involved with passing the voltage on its way to the spark plug. The ignition coil, switch, and distributor cap are among the parts that can fail to deliver sufficient voltage.

When It’s Time For A Replacement

At some point, you’ll need to either replace your car’s engine or retire your vehicle. The assembly can be rebuilt if the framework is still in good working order, but even then, a remanufactured unit may be more appropriate. This is especially true for older assemblies that pose a risk of failing in the near future.

The alternative to a rebuilt or remanufactured unit is a brand new crate engine. While the warranty will usually be much longer, the price for a crate assembly is much higher.

The key is to do everything you can to make sure your engine lasts as long as possible. Periodically check the oil level. Perform routine maintenance and stick to the service intervals listed in your owner’s manual. If you do these things, you’ll prolong the life of your vehicle’s engine.
